SOHO Web Site Reviews: Big Red Wire Free Long Distance Really. Seriously. This is not a scam. Better yet, this is not "Net to Phone". You will make calls like you are supposed to: with your telephone! We absolutely recommend this "Must Have" service for your home office or home based business.
A diary by Courtney Burke, a SOHO'er and bigredwire member since April 2000
There's just 3 steps to free, real long distance: 1. Register your telephone number and we'll tell your local telephone company you've switched to bigredwire long distance. 2. After you make a calljust view your telephone bill online at this site. 3. You can "zap"a charge right off your bill each day. if you don't bother zapping, or make an in-state call, you'll pay a great rate anyway.
I was totally skeptical about getting something for free that i pay a lot of money for now. But, now I'm enjoying free long distance everyday. Here's my Bigredwire story:
April 18: I check out the BRW site after my friend suggests it. Is this really free? I register since Bigredwire's paid rates are cheaper than I pay now anyway.
April 20: Got email confirming Bigredwire as my long distance carrier, picked up the phone and called my sister in California for an hour. So far everything's the same as my last long distance company, good voice quality, no extra numbers to dial.
April 21: Now I'll get to the bottom of this. I go to the Bigredwire site and check out my online bill. There's the call I made to my sister:
What Are The Rules? Free long distance is available for state-to state and international calls only. They don't offer free in-state calls but they do have great prices and give you lots of points for making them.
You can zap any long distance call less than $5. For a domestic call that's a 100 minute conversation. You have 5 days to zap call charges. There are no sign up fees, monthly charges, minimums, or hidden costs of any kind. You will never, ever be charged for anything else.
Now, all I do is select the call and "zap" it from my bill! All calls qualify that are less than 100 minutes long and I owe nothing. Unreal. I can zap international calls too, so the skepticism is starting to wear off.
How do you "Zap"? You just use the Big Red Wire to search for stuff on the Internet.
The best part, besides the free long distance? There are no monthly fees. Bye, bye AT&T!
